Retrieving User Profiles and Activity Information

Overview

The Hacker News MCP Server provides access to user profile data and activity information, allowing you to research community members, track contributions, and identify subject matter experts. This functionality is essential for understanding who's participating in discussions, analyzing user influence, and discovering valuable contributors in specific technical domains.

Accessing User Profiles

To retrieve a user's profile, simply request information about a specific Hacker News username through your AI assistant. The server will fetch comprehensive profile data including the user's karma score, account creation date, and biographical information they've chosen to share.

For example, you might ask: "Show me the profile for user 'pg'" or "What's the karma score for user 'tptacek'?" The server returns structured data that provides insight into the user's presence and reputation within the community.

Understanding Profile Data

Each user profile contains several key pieces of information:

Karma Score: A numerical representation of how much the community has valued the user's contributions through upvotes on their submissions and comments.

Account Age: How long the user has been a member of Hacker News, shown as the account creation timestamp.

About Section: Biographical information, links, or other details the user has chosen to include in their profile.

Submission History: A list of item IDs representing stories and comments the user has posted, allowing you to trace their contribution history.

Retrieving User Activity

Beyond basic profile information, you can access the complete activity history of any user. The submission list in their profile references all stories they've posted and comments they've written. By retrieving these items, you can analyze what topics interest them, how they engage with the community, and the quality of their contributions.

This is particularly useful for identifying experts in specific domains—for instance, finding users who consistently contribute insightful comments on security topics or machine learning discussions.

Practical Applications

User profile retrieval enables several valuable use cases:

  • Expert Identification: Find knowledgeable contributors in specific technical areas by examining their comment history and karma
  • Research Validation: Assess the credibility of information by reviewing the profile of the person sharing it
  • Community Analysis: Understand engagement patterns by studying how different users participate
  • Influence Mapping: Identify thought leaders whose submissions and comments consistently generate discussion

Tips for Effective Use

When working with user profiles, remember that karma reflects community appreciation but isn't the only measure of value. Newer users may offer fresh perspectives despite lower karma scores. Additionally, examine both the quantity and quality of contributions when evaluating a user's expertise in a particular area.
