Retrieving User Profiles and Activity Data

Understanding User Profiles

User profiles on Hacker News contain valuable information about community members, including their contribution history, karma score, and biographical details. The MCP server provides direct access to this data, allowing you to research individual contributors, track thought leaders, or analyze engagement patterns within the community.

When you retrieve a user profile, you'll receive structured information including the username, account creation date, karma score (a measure of community recognition), and an optional "about" section where users describe themselves. You'll also gain access to the user's submission and comment history, providing insight into their areas of expertise and discussion topics.

Accessing User Activity

To retrieve a user profile, simply ask your AI assistant for information about a specific Hacker News user by their username. For example, you might request "Show me the profile for user 'pg'" or "What has user 'tptacek' been posting about recently?"

The server will fetch the current profile data and present it in an easy-to-understand format. This includes:

  • Basic Information: Username, account age, and karma score
  • Bio: The user's self-description (if provided)
  • Submitted Items: IDs of stories and other items the user has posted
  • Comments: IDs of comments the user has made

Working with Activity Data

Once you have a user's activity IDs, you can explore their contributions in detail. Request specific items by their IDs to see the full content of submissions or comments. This is particularly useful for understanding a user's expertise, following their contributions on specific topics, or identifying influential voices in particular technical domains.

For example, you might ask "Show me the last five stories submitted by this user" or "What are the most recent comments from this user about artificial intelligence?" The server will retrieve the relevant items and present them with complete context, including scores, timestamps, and any associated discussions.

Practical Applications

User profile and activity data becomes powerful for several scenarios:

Expert Identification: Find knowledgeable contributors in specific technical areas by reviewing their comment history and the topics they engage with regularly.

Influence Analysis: Assess a user's impact within the community by examining their karma, submission success rates, and the engagement their posts generate.

Trend Tracking: Follow specific users whose perspectives you value to stay informed about topics they consider important or noteworthy.

Tips for Effective Use

When working with user data, remember that Hacker News profiles are public information. Focus on using this data to enhance your understanding of community discussions and identify valuable perspectives. Combine user profile data with story and comment retrieval for comprehensive analysis of how specific contributors shape conversations around technologies, companies, or trends that matter to your work.
