How to Retrieve Top Stories and Story Feeds

The Hacker News MCP Server provides multiple methods for retrieving stories and feeds, giving you flexible access to the content that matters most. Whether you're interested in what's currently trending, the latest submissions, or historically significant posts, the server offers dedicated endpoints for each type of content feed.
Available Story Feeds
Top Stories
Top stories represent the current front page of Hacker News—submissions that have received enough upvotes and engagement to rise to prominence. To retrieve top stories, simply ask your AI assistant for "top stories from Hacker News" or "what's trending on Hacker News right now." The server returns a list of story IDs ranked by their current position, which can then be used to fetch detailed information about each submission.
Top stories are ideal when you want to understand what the technology community is discussing at this moment or need to stay current with breaking news and popular content.
New Stories
New stories show the most recent submissions to Hacker News, regardless of their vote count or engagement level. Access these by requesting "new Hacker News stories" or "latest Hacker News submissions." This feed displays content in reverse chronological order, showing you what's just been posted.
This feed is particularly valuable for early discovery of content, monitoring specific topics as they're submitted, or tracking the flow of new information entering the community.
Best Stories
Best stories represent submissions that have demonstrated sustained value and engagement over time. These are posts that have not only achieved high scores but maintained community interest. Request these through queries like "best Hacker News stories" or "top-rated Hacker News posts."
This feed is excellent for content curation, finding high-quality resources, or identifying discussions that have proven particularly valuable to the community.
Retrieving Story Details
Once you have story IDs from any feed, you can request detailed information about specific submissions. Each story includes the title, URL, author, score, submission time, and number of comments. Simply reference a specific story by asking for "details about Hacker News story [ID]" or "tell me more about this submission."
Practical Tips
Combine feed access with filtering by requesting specific quantities, such as "show me the top 10 stories" or "give me the 5 newest submissions." You can also request stories from multiple feeds simultaneously to compare trending content with recent submissions, helping you identify fast-rising posts that may not yet have reached the front page.
