How to Retrieve Top Stories and Story Feeds

Overview

The Hacker News MCP Server makes it simple to access different story feeds from Hacker News. Whether you're looking for trending discussions, fresh submissions, or the most valued content, you can retrieve these feeds through natural language requests to your AI assistant. This guide explains how to access the various story feeds available through the server.

Available Story Feeds

The server provides access to three primary story feeds that reflect different aspects of community engagement:

Top Stories represent submissions currently featured on the Hacker News front page. These stories have earned their position through community voting and represent what the community considers most relevant and interesting at this moment. Top stories are ideal when you want to understand what's capturing widespread attention in the tech world.

New Stories show the most recent submissions to Hacker News as they arrive. This feed provides real-time access to breaking news, fresh blog posts, and emerging discussions before they've been evaluated by the broader community. Use this feed when you need to stay ahead of trends or monitor specific topics as they're submitted.

Best Stories highlight submissions that have demonstrated sustained value and engagement over time. This curated list represents content that has resonated strongly with the community, making it perfect for discovering high-quality technical articles and discussions.

Retrieving Story Feeds

To access any story feed, simply ask your AI assistant using natural language. You don't need to memorize commands or syntax—just express what you're looking for clearly.

For example:

  • "Show me the top stories on Hacker News right now"
  • "What are the newest submissions to Hacker News?"
  • "Get the best stories from Hacker News"

The server processes your request, retrieves the relevant feed, and returns structured information about each story, including the title, URL, author, submission time, score, and number of comments.

Understanding Story Data

Each story returned includes comprehensive metadata. The score indicates community approval through upvotes, the submission time shows when it was posted, and the comment count reveals the level of discussion it has generated. The author field identifies who submitted the story, allowing you to track contributions from specific users or thought leaders.

Tips for Effective Use

When retrieving story feeds, consider your specific goal. Use top stories for a snapshot of current interests, new stories for monitoring specific topics or keywords, and best stories when seeking thoroughly-vetted, high-quality content. You can also request specific numbers of stories if you want a focused view rather than the entire feed.
