What Claude Code can do with Elasticsearch
Ask your agent in plain language. Each of these maps to a real tool on the server.
- Ask Claude Code to use the manage security tool in Elasticsearch
- Ask Claude Code to use the delete document tool in Elasticsearch
- Ask Claude Code to use the manage ingest pipeline tool in Elasticsearch
- Ask Claude Code to use the manage index template tool in Elasticsearch
- Ask Claude Code to use the manage async search tool in Elasticsearch
Add the Elasticsearch MCP server to Claude Code
Run these once. Afterwards, everyone you give access to signs in the same way.
1. Enable Elasticsearch in Metorial
In your Metorial portal, enable the Elasticsearch MCP server and sign in with the account that owns the data. Access stays governed by your team policies.
2. Add the server over HTTP
Add --scope user to use it in every project.
claude mcp add --transport http metorial <your-magic-mcp-url>3. Sign in
Run /mcp, select Metorial and sign in to load Elasticsearch tools.
Give your team Elasticsearch in Claude Code
Once Elasticsearch is enabled in Metorial, teammates sign in with SSO and get the same connection in Claude Code, with only the tools their role allows.
One link covers every app you approve. See how the MCP gateway handles access, roles and audit logs for the whole company.

Using Elasticsearch tools in Claude Code
What to expect once Elasticsearch is connected.
- Elasticsearch tools appear as mcp__metorial__<tool>. Use that name in permission rules to allow or deny a tool.
- Run /mcp to see whether Metorial is connected and to sign in again.
- Claude Code warns when a tool result passes 10,000 tokens and caps it at 25,000 by default. Raise the cap with MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS.
- Pre-approve trusted Elasticsearch tools with allow rules in your settings so Claude Code stops asking each time.
Troubleshooting Claude Code
- claude mcp list shows "Needs authentication"
- Run /mcp, select Metorial, and sign in. If sign-in keeps failing, choose Clear authentication in the same menu and sign in again.
- A teammate sees "Pending approval"
- Servers shared through a project .mcp.json need approval. Run claude in the project and approve Metorial when asked.
- Large tool results are cut off
- Claude Code limits MCP tool output to 25,000 tokens by default. Raise it with the MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS environment variable.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about connecting Elasticsearch to AI agents with Metorial.
Does Claude Code support the Elasticsearch MCP server?
Yes. Claude Code connects to the Elasticsearch MCP server through one CLI command, pointed at your Metorial URL. You need the Claude Code CLI.Do I need an API key to connect Elasticsearch to Claude Code?
No. You sign in to Elasticsearch once through Metorial, and Claude Code uses that connection. No API keys go into Claude Code's settings.Which Elasticsearch tools can Claude Code use?
All 20 Elasticsearch tools your team allows, such as Cluster Health, List Indices, Get Document. Admins can narrow that list per team. Can I control which teammates use Elasticsearch in Claude Code?
Yes. Role-based access control decides who can use Elasticsearch and which of its tools appear in Claude Code, and every call is logged with the person's identity. What if Claude Code doesn't show Elasticsearch tools?
Run /mcp, select Metorial, and sign in. If sign-in keeps failing, choose Clear authentication in the same menu and sign in again.
